Transforming digital news production at scale: How NDTV Profit delivers real-time business news for a digital-first world
NDTV is one of India’s most respected news networks, known for its legacy of investigative reporting across a range of channels, including NDTV 24x7, NDTV India, and NDTV Profit.
As the network’s 24x7 business news channel, NDTV Profit focuses on real-time stock market updates, economic trends, and expert analysis for those looking to stay ahead in the financial world. With audiences spread across broadcast, mobile, and digital channels, the channel operates in a high-pressure environment where delivering up-to-the-minute news across multiple platforms is a constant challenge.
Since its relaunch in December 2023, NDTV Profit has faced this challenge by going beyond traditional broadcasting, operating from a cutting-edge facility, and adopting a digital-first strategy. With a connected newsroom that powers content for its website, mobile app, and social media channels on YouTube, X, Facebook, and LinkedIn., NDTV Profit stands out as a comprehensive financial news source for today’s audience.
A significant factor in the channel’s success is its ability to adapt rapidly to digital demands. Harmit Singh Malhotra, CTO of NDTV Profit, brought his extensive broadcast experience to transform the channel’s approach to digital content creation and distribution.
His leadership has ensured NDTV Profit delivers reliable news while leveraging technology to connect with a new generation of viewers who expect timely, on-the-go updates across multiple platforms.
Here, nine months after the successful launch of NDTV Profit’s channel relocation and branding, we speak with Harmit to explore how NDTV Profit leverages Wildmoka in this strategy to stay agile, meet real-time demands, and keep its diverse audience engaged in a competitive news environment.
“A lot is happening at NDTV Profit, and our digital strategy is constantly moving and fluid,” says Harmit. “We love experimenting and use our digital platform as the first place to test new ideas. While we create our own strategy, Wildmoka is an important part of that strategy, and it supports us every step of the way. So far, we’ve never faced a situation where we’ve defined a strategy, and someone has said, ‘Wildmoka is not able to do it.’”
The challenge
NDTV Profit’s audience spans large financial institutions, corporations, and a younger generation of Indian investors who expect quick, easily accessible content. The challenge was to rapidly create, edit, and distribute videos and live streams across multiple platforms to meet the real-time demands of this diverse group.
During major financial events, like India’s Union Budget Day or national elections, NDTV Profit often experienced a surge in news coverage, making it challenging to deliver everything simultaneously on broadcast TV. They needed a solution to manage overflow content, enable immediate live coverage, and efficiently scale digital production to keep pace.
“Digital is critical for a business news channel like ours. Our audience includes the biggest financial institutions, brokerage houses, corporations, and a much younger generation of investors in the Indian stock market. Digital is essential for this generation that can’t wait for long discussions on TV—they want quick, specific bytes of information, and only digital allows for this,” Harmit explains.
The solution
Harmit and his team needed a digital content creation and distribution platform to integrate with their existing newsroom and quickly scale to keep up with digital demands.
After evaluating various options, they chose Wildmoka for its one-click video clip production and live popup channel creation. In India, Real Image, a Backlight partner, provided critical consulting, support, and training services, ensuring a fast and smooth rollout for NDTV Profit.
With Wildmoka, NDTV Profit overcame the limitations of traditional broadcast, delivering extended coverage across its digital platforms. For example, on Union Budget Day, they launched a dedicated popup channel to stream continuous coverage and real-time commentary on YouTube and other platforms, meeting audience expectations for immediate, real-time financial insights.
Wildmoka enabled NDTV Profit to:
- Ingest and manage multiple streams simultaneously, including their 24x7 broadcast feed and additional content streams for items not shown on TV.
- React swiftly to high-pressure events, like elections or budget announcements, by creating dedicated popup streams that can be live within minutes.
- Publish fast to multiple digital platforms, optimizing formats for vertical or horizontal display depending on the destination.
“With Wildmoka, ingest streams for breaking news and live events that the linear TV schedule can’t cover are just one button click away from starting a new live pop-up stream on NDTV Profit’s digital platforms,” says Harmit.
He elaborates on how NDTV manages these streams to maximize digital coverage: “We have two streams ingested into Wildmoka. The first is the 24x7 broadcast channel, and the other is used for additional content that doesn’t fit into the TV schedule but we need to show on the digital platform. This second stream helps us manage airtime, which is especially useful during major events like Union Budget Day.”
Union Budget Day is India's key political and financial event, impacting major financial institutions, investors, manufacturers, and more. Harmit explains: “This is the day when many things happen: the major taxes are decided, impacting all the big financial institutions, investors and funds, Indian manufacturers, and so on. Once the Union Budget Day is over, there are multiple reactions from political parties, big corporations, financial institutes, journalists, etc.
“During events like that, our editorial teams have major pressure because lots of news is coming up. Sometimes, you have two breaking stories you can’t broadcast simultaneously on TV. But with Wildmoka, we have multiple live streams ready to go, where we can place our logo and cover everything we need. For Union Budget Day, we were able to create a dedicated popup channel and stream it on YouTube in real-time,” he adds.
The process
The result
Accelerated video production and distribution
Before adopting Wildmoka, ingesting and publishing videos took up to 45 minutes. Now, NDTV Profit’s digital team can complete this process in just two to 10 minutes, sometimes producing up to 60 clips per hour across platforms.
Multi-platform live streaming, simplified
With Wildmoka’s live streaming capabilities, NDTV Profit streams between five and 15 live shows daily to its website, mobile app, and social media platforms like YouTube and LinkedIn.
Maximum efficiency for real-time news delivery
Editors can publish directly to YouTube, Facebook, X, LinkedIn, and more through a single interface, customizing content for each destination in real-time. Wildmoka’s flexibility has also enabled NDTV Profit to experiment with content strategies, from quick bites to longer-form content tailored for digital audiences.
Transforming digital news production at scale
The faster production and ability to launch live events beyond traditional TV broadcasts have given NDTV Profit a distinct edge in delivering real-time news, which is vital for stock traders and financial institutions.
"Wildmoka certainly brought us a quicker turnaround—and time is key for our audience playing in the stock market,” adds Harmit. “Currently, 15 editors are working on Wildmoka, out of 50 staff overall in our Digital team. The team using Wildmoka has never complained about things they previously would have been unable to do. We have experienced no downtime since we purchased it.”
Conclusion
By adopting Wildmoka’s digital content creation and distribution platform, NDTV Profit has transformed its approach to news delivery, successfully establishing a digital-first strategy. With faster video turnaround, flexible live-streaming, and streamlined multi-platform publishing, the channel can keep up with real-time demands and expand its digital reach.
“Wildmoka is now central to NDTV Profit’s digital strategy,” concludes Harmit. “Our digital strategy is, of course, not restricted to Wildmoka’s features and capabilities. However, there has never been a single piece of that strategy we couldn’t easily implement with Wildmoka.”
